Oracle Versus Google – A “Sort of” Decision

The jury deliberating over Oracle’s claims that Google infringed copyrights protecting Oracle’s Java technology reached a mixed decision. Google was found to be guilty of Infringing on a minimal amount of Java code as it developed Android. As a result, Oracle is entitled to statutory damages (not a cut at the Android profits). The damages are minimal, and it’s unclear whether or not Oracle will even end up with any damages as Google has already voiced their intention to move for a mistrial.

This case is not nearly over, and began with a lawsuit brought on by Oracle in August 2010, alleging the Internet search giant had infringed Java copyrights and patents with Android.

It’s very telling that the jury in this case had such a hard time coming to a decision. Copyright in this case is fuzzy and it isn’t a clear cut case – our guess is Oracle will never see a time from Google.
