Servers and software … they are like night and day when it comes to licensing and all scenarios need to be considered. You must acquire a license for each instance of the management server software you run. You may run this on a physical or virtual OS environment. There are two separate categories of management licenses – one for servers and one for non-servers.
A license for managed servers is required for each server’s OS environment on a device that you want to manage. You also have the option of a single System Center Server Management Suite Enterprise license, which may be used to manage multiple environments.
For each non-server you need a client management license (ML) and there are two types:
First, you will need an operating system environment (OSE) client management license for each non-server you would like to manage on a device. For each management license you will be allowed to run one server OSE on a specific device to be managed by the server software. Second, you may need to purchase separate server management licenses for each server OSE. You can also choose a user ML over a client ML if you prefer to license per user. For each user, each client management license allows any number of client OSEs on that user’s device(s) to be managed by the server software.
