Oracle Earnings: Not Bad…

Despite the financial crisis, Oracle has exceeded expectations. Regardless of its recent positive earnings release – they have predicted a significant slowdown for next quarter in software license sales, which some analysts believe may be an indication of a slowdown in IT altogether. With Oracle Open World and a flurry of new product announcements, the company is hoping that its broad product lines will keep the company’s momentum moving forward in the impending bad economy. With such a wide range […]

Larry isn’t worried

With the financial crisis (or should I say crises) happening faster than a bunch of falling dominoes, Larry Ellison is unconcerned about how this will affect Oracle and technology spending (in general).  The fact that Oracle’s “exposure to banking customers is in the low-single digits” with an even lower exposure to US banks could be the reason Larry has kept on smiling.   In fact, revenues grew 18% compared to last year’s 4th quarter.  Well, if Larry isn’t worried, why should […]

BEA at Oracle OpenWorld

What can we expect from BEA at this year’s Oracle OpenWorld? This will be the dynamic duo’s debut and we’re looking forward to seeing what they have to offer this coming year! We expect the middleware portion of the show to be the biggest, brightest and have the best bang for our buck.  Oracle and BEA have enhanced, reinforced and integrated both companies’ product suites, offering more options and better performance for customers. For those of you attending the show, […]

Oracle Launched New Version of Oracle Audit Vault

Oracle has released a new version of Oracle Audit Vault which now allows you to collect audit data from Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and 2005 in addition to Oracle databases.  Both the Oracle and Microsoft database audit data can be consolidated into a centralized repository and unauthorized activities can be detected. In addition to the Microsoft capabilities, the reporting in the new version if much more customizable, allowing you to address specific compliance guidelines such as SOX or regulations specific […]

Quick Byte: Microsoft Licensing Tip # 1

Just like Oracle software licensing, Microsoft has its complexities as well. When using a Microsoft application, you must license each device in which you will access the software (locally and remotely). You can install any version of the application you prefer, for example many users currently will use Office 2003 instead of the newer 2007 version, but if both are installed, 2007 must be licensed. The same goes for a server installation – if computers in your office are using […]

Multicore: more processors, more confusing.

Companies like  Oracle and Microsoft typically charge software licensing fees on enterprise server software per processor. With multicore processors, this standard no longer applies – leaving customers feeling like they are paying more in licensing fees for generally the same performance. Corporate IT is still, to this day, confused about the pricing model because, after attempts made by Oracle and Microsoft, nothing has really stuck.  Standards certainly need to be developed for multicore as well as virtualization. Best case scenario would be to charge a single […]

Quick Byte: Oracle Licensing Tip #4

When making modifications to Oracle applications with either Oracle Database Enterprise Edition or Oracle Internet Application Server Enterprise Edition pre installed with your bundle, be aware that the licenses are considered restricted use, meaning you cannot modify, alter or change the underlying products. These products are meant to be used out of the box – otherwise they require further software licensing requirements including the slightest modification – as minor as changing a form or report. By making these changes you […]
