A few hours ago, Oracle and Microsoft announced their new frenemies relationship that allows pieces of Oracle’s software to mesh with Microsoft’s software and online services. Basically, Microsoft and Oracle agreed to act like friends + enemies so that companies can run Oracle software on Windows Server Hyper V, the “virtualization” software – and Windows Azure. This could be the start of a books entitled Frenemies in the Cloud, a light-hearted, comedy about love, life and competition.

We have been saying this about Microsoft here at Miro for a long time – the company has evolved from being the supplier of the Windows Operating System, into a much bigger beast – they are now a server, software-and-services, and cloud company, with Windows being their third largest business.

Is it still the same after Oracle has purchased Sun? One of the first things I noticed after the similarity between IBM and Oracle’s CPU-based software licensing – both base the licensing on cores – I noticed Oracle skews their software core factor table to favor Sun hardware. IBM doesn’t reduce the software licensing if a client runs their software on an IBM box.
