What would the blind maiden of justice say about 3rd party support?

Round and round the merry-go-round we go. Oracle is suing former partner CedarCrestone, similar to the accusations Oracle took against SAP, TomorrowNow & Rimini Street. Oracle is suing CedarCrestone for breach of contract, unfair competition and copyright infringement (the latter being the biggest no no with any software vendor). Rimini Street is also being sued by Oracle for similar issues. In the case of SAP’s TomorrowNow, Oracle was awarded $1.3 billion in 2010 only to have a judge set aside […]

Multicore: more processors, more confusing.

Companies like  Oracle and Microsoft typically charge software licensing fees on enterprise server software per processor. With multicore processors, this standard no longer applies – leaving customers feeling like they are paying more in licensing fees for generally the same performance. Corporate IT is still, to this day, confused about the pricing model because, after attempts made by Oracle and Microsoft, nothing has really stuck.  Standards certainly need to be developed for multicore as well as virtualization. If you are planning on making a large software purchase – don’t wait until the end of anything – month, quarter or year. Sales reps are pushing to close the big deals at the end of their cycle and will likely push your own contract to the back burner with bigger fish to fry.   […]

Licensing Profit Margins to Implode?

Gartner analyst William Snyder addressed software licensing at the Gartner Emerging Technologies Conference a little over a week ago, highlighting that software profit margins will erode, pricing will increase, all due to the fact that only a few big players exist in the market creating a oligopoly. Software budgets are continually under pressure from CEOs hoping to use a large portion to invest in new technology, when in reality they end up blowing their whole budgets on maintenance and licensing fees. […]
